All the FAR's are on the faa.gov website and are searchable.
I started flying when I was 15, timed my solo to happen right after my 16th birthday. § 61.83 Eligibility requirements for student pilots. To be eligible for a student pilot certificate, an applicant must: (a) Be at least 16 years of age for other than the operation of a glider or balloon. (b) Be at least 14 years of age for the operation of a glider or balloon. (c) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft.

Most instructors would be willing to begin lessons if your son can reach the rudder pedals. Some will even coordinate the turns for a small "student" who can't reach the pedals. He could learn to fly, but wouldn't be an official student until 16, I think. [couldn't log time, solo, etc.] But he could certainly take lessons right away. There's a lot to learn even before beginning "officially." I'd find an instructor, and check into it if you are both willing to begin. bb |

Thanks for that info. My 14 year old is almost 6'1" and weighs over 200 pounds now. He really wants to get his pilots license. So maybe some lessons would keep him satisfied for now.
